I have a previous 8.9" acer and liked the size of this one much more. The weight is about the same but the screen is much better. Not only the size of the screen but the resolution is excellent. I could not use the old acer for more than a half hour but this machine can easily substitute for a larger laptop. The cons are that it is unusable out of the box and needs a lot of tweaking to get it to run. I bought the XP version because I can't go beyond XP for a lot of the software I need for work. The processor on this machine is slower than my old Acer but the battery life is much longer. The old machine averaged about 4.5 hours and this one easily tops 7 hours on a full charge. I'm willing to trade some clock speed for longer battery life. The hard drive is about the same as my old one and large enough for a netbook. This machine comes with 1gb of Ram and probably needs 2gb. I will be upgrading that at a cost of 50 bucks. If software is not an issue the Acer running windows 7 with more ram and a larger hard drive is a better buy. This machine should only be purchased by people who know how to tweak a system and get rid of all the bloatware. I used msconfig to get rid of all the startup items except the mouse pointer and anti virus. It comes with Mcafee anti-virus which slows the computer down to a crawl and requires you to pay for updates. It's just worthless so I put my NOD32 on it which is way better. Google desktop is another junk-ware you need to get rid of. After about 2 hours I was able to get the computer to work the way I wanted. There are some things that slow the machine down that are not so obvious so it takes time. I have no idea why Acer would sell this machine as is. People who are not windows experts will just get frustrated and return it. This is why people wind up buying Macs because they just work well right out of the box. In summary this is a great computer for an expert windows user who needs XP. I have not installed the extra memory yet but I can do most of the things I want including using Netflix and watching Youtube videos. Some basic things on Facebook are too much for this computer right now. I hope the extra memory will help but this also pushes the price up.
