Acer AOD250-1517 10.1-Inch Ruby Red Netbook - Up to 9 Hours of Battery Life Get it now!

My husband bought this netbook for me as I was having major back surgery and we thought it would be an easy way for me to keep my family and friends updated on my progress....wrong. We enrolled with a server, Clear, so that we could use the netbook away from home, as my surgery was not going to be in the same town we live in. After several attempts in getting the email up and running, the server representative felt there was something wrong with the Microsoft software on the netbook. We did have internet connection on the netbook. Then we contacted the Acer support service, and I spoke to several rather arrogant young Eastern Asian men who talked down to me nearly everytime I called them. We tried several things to get the Microsoft Outlook Express software to work, including uninstalling it and then re installing it. This did not work, and by this time we could not even get the netbook to come on. We were so frustrated. We were given the number of another service department "who have the smartest guys and they should be able to help you". There will be a charge for this though! I asked why there would be a charge when it was a new product and had never worked, and he went on to explain that Microsoft installs their software and if it doesn't work properly then Acer is not responsible for that! I paid $59.95 to talk to another young man for 30 minutes, and he kept insisting I should have my home server on the netbook and he used all but 4 minutes of my time on this. I was not very long post op by this time, and I was in pain and just didn't have the energy to mess with it anymore. If anyone knows how to get some action out of these people, let me know!!!I know Amazon doesn't deal with the service on computers but to me this reflects badly on them. The whole thing sounds like a scam, I buy the netbook and Oh dear the software doesn't work properly and Acer is not responsible for that, so now I have to pay to try and get it fixed!!!! Crazy.

Acer Aspire One AOD250-1738 10.1-Inch White Netbook - 7.5 Hour Battery Life Order Now

Since buying an Acer 8.9" Netbook I've been quite pleased with it. The 10.1" version polishes up an already sleek machine to be worth a purchase. I've been hooking up friends with Acers like this current model. And there are improvements.

Compared to my older 8.9" model this lacks a second SD card slot. It only has the one multi flash card reader (high-capacity compatible). In this case they also included a cover that snaps into the slot to keep dust out when not in use. It still has the three USB 2.0 ports, VGA external display port, audio in/out jacks, Kensington lock hole and AC adapter port. The best part is that it uses the same rechargeable battery packs as the 8.9" Acer. If you want a higher capacity battery I recommend the 9-Cell Super-Capacity Li-ion Battery.

Improvements between this and the 8.9" model is the addition of BlueTooth capability and enhanced audio featuring Dolby Headphone technology. And the extra inches results in a bigger keyboard which feels closer to a standard PC keyboard. The best improvement of all is the ease in upgrading the memory. This 10.1" has an easily accessible panel on the underside where you can upgrade the system RAM quite easily for a quick upgrade. The 8.9" Acer lacks that feature.

Just like the 8.9" Acer, because of a lack of external storage all software that ships with the Acer is on a specially configured hard drive with a hidden partition. Most of the drivers are available in the "\I386" subdirectory on the main hard drive. I suggest backing up these drivers onto a flash memory card. If you want a great external drive with both the smooth looks and multiread/burn features I wholeheartedly recommend the LG Electronics DVD+/-RW LightScribe Dual Layer Slim External.

While the Atom processor is very energy efficient it isn't going to win any speed records. But for what it offers, such as very long battery life and portability, I have found no major problems with this netbook. My needs don't demand much in the way of horsepower (usually writing, graphic design and game emulator use with some retro programming thrown in). And this is one of the last models to have XP-Home installed on it which is nice if you found your own experiences with "7" or Vista less than awe-inspiring.

I'm impressed with the changes made to this 10.1" model versus the 8.9" model. Even if you currently have a netbook it doesn't hurt to get another as a spare or to hook a friend up with.

UPDATE 2010-03-08:

One of the gripes that I have with this Acer is that there's more stuff that I had to uninstall from it as opposed to the 8.9" Acer. In particular I removed the unnecessary M$-Office trialware, M$-Works (I'm quite happy with OpenOffice.org) and a very bloated trialware Acer-branded game pack which ate up disc space as well. Also there's a hidden "C:\ACER" folder that contains the installers as well (it still has a hidden partition, though).

What I did was use "Add & Remove Programs" via Control Panel to get rid of the bloat. I transferred the C:\ACER folder to a SDHC card and created a backup DVD-R that contained that and the pre-uninstall of the stuff before I pruned it all (backup made using 7-Zip's very tight LZMA compression).

Still, it was worth the trouble and I still highly recommend this netbook.

Acer Aspire One AOD250-1165 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook - 3+ Hour Battery Life

Previously, I purchased and returned a netbook from a major manufacturer, hated it slow and always crashing. I love this netbook, cheap, works well and I prefer the 3 hour battery. The larger battery adds more weight, and even in airports, I'm never far from a recharge. It's easy to carry around. I bought one for my sister, too.Get more detail about Acer Aspire One AOD250-1165 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook - 3+ Hour Battery Life.

Acer AOD250-1517 10.1-Inch Ruby Red Netbook - Up to 9 Hours of Battery Life

Bought this little laptop few weeks ago I like it very much.
It is so light, Love it.
I bring my laptop with me all the time so to have a light one was a must. I like the fact that also the power cord is light.
No issue with the smaller keyboard - I had a 14inches before and I didn't notice a huge difference. Only thing I miss is the "go to end of line" button.
It boots pretty fast which is nice.
The internet seems to be a bit slow to load but I haven't been able to figure out if it is a connection problem where I am or the pc.
I have to say that when you are using it you don't feel like the screen is small (they have this nice function of the scroll padd that allows you to zoom in and out of the page very very easily) but if you have a 14 inch nearby all of a sudden you feel like that screen is enormous :)
All in all I think it was a good buy for the price.
the battery really lasts a long time - I got up to 7 hours with Open office, pdf, internet and skype working. Get more detail about Acer AOD250-1517 10.1-Inch Ruby Red Netbook - Up to 9 Hours of Battery Life.

Where To Buy Acer Aspire One AOD250-1738 10.1-Inch White Netbook - 7.5 Hour Battery Life

I work full-time and teach part-time online, so this is an ideal solution to connect with my students more frequently during my commute on the train. It's nice to have a compact laptop - battery life is LONG! Only dislike is that it's a PC (I'm a Mac girl through and through). But given the price and what I'm using it for, it rocks!Get more detail about Acer Aspire One AOD250-1738 10.1-Inch White Netbook - 7.5 Hour Battery Life.

Acer Aspire One AOD250-1165 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook - 3+ Hour Battery Life

I was leery of ordering after reading some of the negative reviews, but CompUSA had a price too good to pass up. Delivery was `fast' and the netbook has an extremely slim profile. It operated right out of the box but I gave it a full run through after charging the battery.

First the good points: The wireless card picks up signals that my Dell Inspiron couldn't. The keypad is comfortable enough to type, although it is small. The touch pad has the ability to enlarge the display for those of us whose eyes aren't what they used to be. I received an excellent upload/download speed test 100' away from my modem. It doesn't come with a CD drive, but, if you have a desktop or laptop with a CD drive you can copy programs onto a flash drive, then install them on the netbook. The internal webcam works very well.

Here's the negative points: The battery life is short but that's to be expected considering the size of the battery. The speakers are somewhat `tinny', but again that's to be expected. They are loud enough to clearly hear my YouTube videos. The touchpad is small so an inexpensive mouse is advisable.

All in all I am pleasantly surprised. If it does act up I will update the posting.
