I bought this to replace my aging Asus eeePC 900HDB(Well actually I originally bought the Asus 1005HAB, but returned it in favor of this one) and am more than satisfied. Even straight out of the box (minus cleaning up the startup crapware, of course), this netbook was peppy and more than capable. I quickly installed Firefox with 6'ish plugins, Office 2007, Adobe Photoshop CS4 and a few more programs and am happy to say all work wonderfully. It started to slow down a bit if I had a bunch of processor/memory intensive apps running simultaneously, but that's to be expected and I really had to push it's limits to get it to slow down.

I then swapped the 1gb memory chip out for a 2gb 677 module and after cloning with Acronis, swapped the 250gb 5400RPM Western Digital Blue out for a 320gb 7200 RPM Western Digital Black drive and now this thing absolutely flies! I highly suggest both upgrades for anyone that might be a bit more of a "power user" and at least the memory upgrade for the rest.

I really have no cons to list. Some might be put off by the smaller keys or the smaller trackpad vs the eeePCs, but I have no problems with the keyboard (I'm a pretty big-boned guy) and I actually like the sunken in(but smaller) trackpad better than the flush one on the eeePCs. Also it has a shiny finish and is of course, a fingerprint magnet, but this doesn't bother me in the least. I love the looks of this unit and a matte finish wouldn't look as good in my opinion.

Others might also be hesitant by the inclusion of Windows 7 Starter. You shouldn't be. The only "real" thing it doesn't allow you to do that the other versions do is allow you to change your background. Big deal. There are programs one can get from Stardock that re-enables this feature if you must have it. There are other features left out, but none really matter for the target buyer of this type of device. You CAN, however, run unlimited programs up to the limit of your RAM. Microsoft, at first, limited Win 7 Starter to running 3 simultaneous programs, but have since lifted that restriction.

You'd be hard pressed to find a better netbook in this price range. Highly recommended!

I just purchased my Dell Mini 10 (Blue Cover) and I have to say that this was one of the best investments I ever made. If you think you are getting a high end laptop for the price of three-hundred bucks, then you are sorely mistaken. This is basically a smart phone PDA increased to the size of a ten inch screen with a keyboard attached. Most of the bells & whistles are intact.

At first it took me some time to get use to the screen. Websites are slightly altered due to the 10 inch screen, so and with the tool bar on top that includes (File, Refresh, etc) it can seem like there's hardly any room to view webpage's, but you'll get use to it. Viewing any site that you would on a regular desktop will have certain parts of the page moved around when viewing it on your netbook & this is to be expected because of the size.

I know everyone is complaining about the keypad, but it's really not that bad. It does take a few tries before you realized what works best for you. I've learned from having a Dell Studio Laptop that the best thing to do is just utilize the free space as a mouse and click. Don't bother trying to hit down on the key, but just double tap on the keypad to pick a selection. If you don't, you will find the experience of navigating through websites, typing a document on word, etc to be a horrendous experience.

Otherwise, if you are looking for a great small compact netbook to stay connected to the web, check email, browse a few sites - then this is the netbook for you. There isn't much customization due to the small size of the netbook that feels very light just a little under three pounds and practically smaller and skinnier then the new Twilight book. I would have it ordered it on amazon, but it was cheaper through Dell.

Overall, I am very pleased with my purchase because it's a great investment for anyone who needs internet access on the go. The only complaint I have is the price. I know its three-hundred, but I own a regular laptop with a 15 inch screen & that HP was only three-hundred. Sure, it was not a high end groundbreaking laptop, but it does the trick & power wise, it's stronger than the mini. I really feel the price point should drop by hundred bucks. Otherwise, this is still a great PC tool to have.

I've had this for 2 days by now, so far I'm very happy with it. It's light weight and small enough for me to carry around everywhere which suits my main purpose of having this as a backup and on network all the time as long as I can get wifi. I chose xp since some applications I normally use do not have Win7 upgrade just yet, plus I was not sure if I'd go through the Vista nightmare again... I got this for my wife as a gift. It's a nice lightweight machine. My complains are it comes with a lot of shovelware (unnecessary programs that hog resources.) I removed all of that and the machine was much snappier. It wouldn't have been reasonable to expect a beginner user to do that, so if you're buying this for someone and you have some computer know how, you should boot it first to get it cleaned up to run best. Windows 7 starter is absolutely fine. The primary limitations are the wallpaper not being able to change and file sharing is minimalistic. I had no problems connecting this to a wireless printer / scanner, connecting to multiple wireless networks. I used google chrome to play netflix and hulu and they both displayed without skips or poor rendering. Google docs worked just fine. As I was changing roles, I was turning over my company laptop. I thought about buying a full size notebook, but decided to give this netbook a try.

I custom ordered mine thru HP. It seems most of the HP 311's sold in the stores had the Atom N270. Well the Atom N280 is only a $25 upgrade option. Not much difference probably in performance, but a little helps.

I also ordered the netbook with xp and only 1gb of ram, and decided to add the 2gb ram upgrade myself.

My order in all, came in under $500.

For browsing, and most applications I say this netbook works just fine. For portable machines I usually prefer the "eraser point" mouse control over the touchpad. And this netbook only confirms that feeling. If you tend to rest your palms as you type, you'll find yourself accidentally tapping the touchpad and moving your cursor around. Palms up, wrists straight, they keyboard works pretty well. The mouse buttons are a bit stiff and have a loud click sound when in use. Eventually I forget about it, but it may be a minor annoyance for some.

The construction feels pretty solid. The 11.3 size is probably the sweetspot. It is small enough that it is very portable and lightweight, yet easier to manage and use than the 10" netbooks.

As a gamer, I'm a bit disappointed in the 3-D performance. That is more a reflection of the ATOM processor. It does however handle most of the streaming video and ripped DVD performance that other netbooks can not handle. That is a nice point for me. This machine seems to be the perfect travel rig.

Battery life is pretty good, as I can get about 6 hours of run time. The LCD screen is a little glossy, but colors are nice and is an improvement from the notebooks I've used in the past.

Ultimately, there are more capable gaming machines but they are not nearly as portable. I give the product overall a 4 star rating. It will not replace a more powerful notebook, but it fills most duties. I'm sure somewhere down the line there will be a netbook with more video capabilities but it is hard to find a machine with the perfect size, power and battery life.

I was leery of ordering after reading some of the negative reviews, but CompUSA had a price too good to pass up. Delivery was `fast' and the netbook has an extremely slim profile. It operated right out of the box but I gave it a full run through after charging the battery.

First the good points: The wireless card picks up signals that my Dell Inspiron couldn't. The keypad is comfortable enough to type, although it is small. The touch pad has the ability to enlarge the display for those of us whose eyes aren't what they used to be. I received an excellent upload/download speed test 100' away from my modem. It doesn't come with a CD drive, but, if you have a desktop or laptop with a CD drive you can copy programs onto a flash drive, then install them on the netbook. The internal webcam works very well.

Here's the negative points: The battery life is short but that's to be expected considering the size of the battery. The speakers are somewhat `tinny', but again that's to be expected. They are loud enough to clearly hear my YouTube videos. The touchpad is small so an inexpensive mouse is advisable.

All in all I am pleasantly surprised. If it does act up I will update the posting.

I really like this little guy. It is light, the battery works well, it has all of the necessary programs pre-loaded (except MS Office). Seems to be very durable. I haven't had any problems (unless you're throwing it down a stairwell I don't think you will either). The only thing I miss is my CD/DVD Drive. Don't get this to replace your home computer, but absolutely get it for traveling, or being mobile throughout the home and workplace! Fabulous. I got this for my wife as a gift. It's a nice lightweight machine. My complains are it comes with a lot of shovelware (unnecessary programs that hog resources.) Some examples of this were both Norton and McAfee were installed. I replaced those with Windows Essentials. There were some games, some acer utilities, adobe reader (i prefer foxit reader.) I removed all of that and the machine was much snappier. It wouldn't have been reasonable to expect a beginner user to do that, so if you're buying this for someone and you have some computer know how, you should boot it first to get it cleaned up to run best. Windows 7 starter is absolutely fine. The primary limitations are the wallpaper not being able to change and file sharing is minimalistic. I had no problems connecting this to a wireless printer / scanner, connecting to multiple wireless networks. I used google chrome to play netflix and hulu and they both displayed without skips or poor rendering. Google docs worked just fine. After 6 weeks of intermittent use, it stopped charging or even operating plugged in. For a while, it worked as a plug in but failed when screen was rotated to use as a tablet. While it worked it was great- PC by day; Kindle at night. I called the 800 # on the back of the computer and was told I would receive a RMA # but so far 'nada'. To send it back for warranty repair, I have to reinstall the 1 gig of RAM it came with (I ordered a 2 gig Crucial expansion when I purchased it on Amazon). Also, I never could get the digitizer/calibrator to work. Pen was always 1/4" off the mark..exasperating to say the least.

Let's remember that this machine (as are all in the category) is not designed to be a replacement for a full-featured notebook computer. It is better to think of it as a large iPod Touch, Zune, or Archos internet-connected device. In that role, this netbook succeeds completely.
Many people deride the touchpad but I have to say that it's one of the things I like best. So many people don't bother to delve deeper into Control Panel settings or research the functionality instructions of electronics and thus do not enjoy their full benefits. Entering and adjusting the trackpad settings yields a multitude of special functions such as 2-finger scrolling (both vertical and horizontal), image size enlargement and reduction and other terrific navigation shortcuts. It almost makes the trackpad work like a touch-screen iPod.
As far as I'm concerned, the only alteration to the basic hardware configuration needed is to upgrade to the maximum 2GB memory allowed ($35-$40). Doing so definitely improves functionality.
Some also bemoan the lack of Bluetooth but that is easily corrected with a USB dongle for about $5 these days.
External USB, external monitor, headphone and other jacks are wonderful and can be increased with the use of a USB hub. The camera has not, and probably will not be used by me so I cannot comment.
The keyboard has a nice responsive feel and while small, is perfectly usable. Battery life is acceptable based on the designed function of this NETbook. It is more than adequate when used to check e-mail, web-surf or shop and do light work or play. Anything longer than the 3-hour limit can easily be accomplished by plugging it in. However, choosing the same model with a larger 6-cell battery would not be out of line, if desired.
Wireless set-up was easy and flawless and, with the included Windows XP Home, software installation and other familar functions are successful.
Build quality seems very good and I expect this machine to last quite a while with careful use. It's small size and portability doesn't negate the need for care.
I've read some mentions of this unit getting hot during use. I have not experienced this as my unit has only remained reasonabley warm.
If one buys this netbook as a supplement to a desktop or notebook computer he or she will not be disappointed. Trying to make this a replacement for a professional, work-level computer will only lead to frustration.

I was leery of ordering after reading some of the negative reviews, but CompUSA had a price too good to pass up. Delivery was `fast' and the netbook has an extremely slim profile. It operated right out of the box but I gave it a full run through after charging the battery.

First the good points: The wireless card picks up signals that my Dell Inspiron couldn't. The keypad is comfortable enough to type, although it is small. The touch pad has the ability to enlarge the display for those of us whose eyes aren't what they used to be. I received an excellent upload/download speed test 100' away from my modem. It doesn't come with a CD drive, but, if you have a desktop or laptop with a CD drive you can copy programs onto a flash drive, then install them on the netbook. The internal webcam works very well.

Here's the negative points: The battery life is short but that's to be expected considering the size of the battery. The speakers are somewhat `tinny', but again that's to be expected. They are loud enough to clearly hear my YouTube videos. The touchpad is small so an inexpensive mouse is advisable.

All in all I am pleasantly surprised. If it does act up I will update the posting.

I called the ASUS Eee support number on the bottom, and after dialing twice and listening to a phone ring for 15 minutes I was told that ASUS does NOT cross-ship replacements, that I had to find my own box, ship it back to them at my expense, and wait for a replacement! To add to the experience, the support line's phone system is so bad that entire sentences get cut off, forcing me to keep saying "What? Please repeat that..". Mattel walkie-talkies have better connections.
As an IT professional, I have dealt with customer support from just about every computer brand out there, and ASUS has to be by far the WORST. Since all netbooks are pretty much the same, and there isn't much separating them by price, post-sale support is a significant factor. I'm talking some very small details when I don't give this product five stars. I purchased it after checking reviews and stats on its competitors. My only complaints with the HP Mini 311 are: 1) There's no cover latch, so one must put a fingernail into the lid to open it, 2) The cursor seems to skip to another place in the email or word doc while I'm typing. Maybe that's because I'm heavy on the keys and have yet to look for a way to desensitize the keyboard for me, and 3) I really miss a volume control wheel on the exterior of the unit, so I can adjust audio volume without having to open it and find the volume control on the task bar or with some shortcut of keystrokes, which I've not yet found. Finally, the padded sleeve that comes extra from HP is the one to get. I tried to cut corners with another one at less price and ended up giving it away. I received the Toshiba NB205-N325 Netbook (in Posh Pink) as a Xmas gift. Unfortunately the 1st one I got was dead out of box, would not even turn on. Amazon sent me a replacement immediately and I received it in 2 days (here in Hawaii)! Kudos to Amazon's customer service.

The second netbook I received from Amazon was PERFECT. Toshiba NB205 design is probably the best out in the market right now, as far as netbooks goes, no details have been overlooked. Love the almost full size tiled keyboard, and I have no problems switching over. The screen itself is bright and sharp. Under normal use, I was able to get at least 8 hours out of the battery, which I'm impressed since I do a lot of net browsing and videos viewing. The windows 7 starter was a little disappointing in the beginning as I found out that it does not allow you to change your wallpaper, however a little "googling" and you will find that someone already wrote a program to allow you to change the wallpaper :) Also the NB205-N325 model DOES NOT have bluetooth connectivity, which is a bit strange since the NB205-N313 which runs on XP does comes with bluetooth connectivity.
